The Essence of Automation: Cars & Cappuccino

In Thinking in Bets, World Series of Poker champion Annie Duke explains that AI and humans excel at different kinds of decisions. Humans understand context; algorithms don’t.

What is “context?” Read the captions on these 40 images. That’s what AI thinks the images are. In another test, AI mistook an image of a turtle with whipped cream on top for a Cappuccino.

But computer vision isn’t useless. It helps train manufacturer CAF avoid collisions by identifying signs with 98.7% accuracy, billions of times a day. Humans can approach that kind of volume of decision-making.
