Innovation is Culture, Not Technology

I just finished a 14-post series about Panera Bread. When I started it was about technology. When I finished it was about culture.

Yes, Panera Bread uses advanced master data management (MDM) technology. Technologically speaking, they do lots of cool stuff. But what I learned while writing the Panera story was that magic is their culture, not the technology. We make the paintbrushes, the Panera team makes the art.

Panera’s culture helped them fight through barriers, listen to customers, and pull off their dramatic pandemic pivot. Tools help, but only because the Panera culture uses them well.

Innovation is culture, not technology.
