The Animated Bubble Chart Mod (Hans Rosling Fans Unite!)

Spotfire Mods are infinitely customizable analytics applications that anyone can make. Today’s #ModsMonday post is about the Animated Bubble Chart by Tobias Lehtipalo, Olof Bjerke, and Erik Brandin. It animates data in time like Hans Rosling’s TED Talk, which has been viewed over 14 million times. Their Mod is available now in the Spotfire community. It helps you be like Hans!

The same data Hans used in his TED Talk is animated below. It shows the life expectancy of countries as compared to their GDP, animated over time. Here, we highlight the United States, UK, France, Germany, and Japan leading up to, during, and after World War II.

Until 1941, all countries are growing healthier—moving up and to the right. Then, from 1942-1946, life expectancy plummets. In 1946, the trend reverses—longevity begins to increase, but it takes years.

Mods require no coding. Anyone can use them. What if...

  • You could animate IoT sensor reading data to find faulty equipment?

  • You could animate the impact of global warming on your business operations?

  • You could animate the of COVID on demographic data?

Mods help anyone explore these questions in minutes through the power of no-code and the community ecosystem. The Animated Bubble Chart Mod is one of a growing library of community-sourced analytics apps. Check it out in the TIBCO community here, or visit our new Mods Marketplace here.
